Polaris Industries is in talks with Eicher Motors to setup a two-wheeler partnership in India. The American maker had announced few weeks ago its plans to enter the Indian premium motorcycle market with their ‘Victory’ and ‘Indian Motorcycles’ brand.
The talks between the two auto-giant are currently in nascent stage but if the deal goes through, Polaris will sell locally assembled versions of their motorcycles in India. The company is eyeing Royal Enfield’s Jaipur plant which is currently empty.
The Indian consumers will be happy if this deal happens, as assembling the American motorcycles in India will help the company price their products lower. There is a possibility of the motorcycles to come to India through completely-built-up (CBU) route initially but will later be switched to local assembly.
Currently, Harley Davidson is the only American motorcycle brand that has been doing good business in India. They will be joined by the British motorcycle company, Triumph later this year with their full range of premium motorcycles.
"While nothing has been finalised yet, discussions are happening on various matters, including extending the tie-up with Eicher to include bikes as well. Polaris is searching for a local partner, which it feels is necessary to be a significant player in India in the large two-wheeler segment. For this, Eicher is the first logical choice. It is eyeing Eicher's Rajasthan plant, which has been lying unused for many years now" said a source to FE.
