When Piaggio India launched the Aprilia SR150 this year, it shocked everyone with the pricing. It was launched at Rs 65,000 (ex-showroom Pune) in August, however, deliveries began only in October.
Before the Aprilia SR150 was launched, Piaggio’s monthly sales stood between 2000 units and 3000 units. This was because of the pricing of their products, which are expensive. With the SR150, the company was clear that this scooter will be give them numbers and in a way, it has. The company sold 3402 SR150s in October and 2764 units in November. While the sales figures aren’t comparable with the Activas and the Jupiters of the market, it is a decent start for a product in the mass market segment but with sporty appeal. In fact, the SR150 is selling more than the entire Vespa range. However, we’ll get a better understanding of the SR150 sales in the next two to three months.
Unlike other manufacturers, Piaggio is limited by its sales and service reach. But the Italian company has pledged to increase its dealership numbers in the country. Over the last few months, Piaggio has opened a couple of Motoplex showrooms in metros. However, we believe if the company is able to open showrooms in Tier-1 and Tier-2 cities, it will be able to garner good numbers as there are customers who are ready to spend on a premium brand.
