Royal Enfield has commenced the production at its new facility in Oragadam near Chennai. The company rolled out the first motorcycle- the Classic 500 Desert Storm today from this new facility which was built in just 11 months. The company has been holding trial production at the facility since January.
The new facility is spread across 50 acres has been built with an investment of Rs 150 crore. It can produce 1.50 lakh units in a year that can be later ramped up to 1.75 lakh motorcycles towards the end of this year. The facility also features a 1.4 km test track and dynamometer.
"This new plant has been benchmarked to achieve the highest level of quality and productivity. We have re-tooled many of the parts that make up our motorcycles - so that they are of exacting accuracy and finish. The substrate quality of the sheet metal parts, for example, is now at par with the best in the world; when these parts undergo the world-leading CED and paint process here at Oragadam - they will have a surface finish and life of the highest quality." said Siddhartha Lal, MD and CEO, Eicher Motors.
The new facility is expected to bring the waiting period for most of the Royal Enfield motorcycles down significantly. The Desert Storm and the Thunderbird 350 and 500 models will be manufactured in this facility along with soon to be launched Continental GT café-racer.
