Royal Enfield has launched the Flying Flea. It is not a new motorcycle, but a new sub-brand from RE. In fact, this is the first time that Royal Enfield is exploring the sub-brand route. This sub-brand will launch its first motorcycle in 2026, and here is all you need to know about the Flying Flea.
The Flying Flea
The new sub-brand will be an electric or EV-only brand to begin with. It will focus on light weight motorcycles with what RE calls an urban plus riding range.
According to Royal Enfield, an urban plus riding range means enough kilometres per charge to take on city commutes or a nearby excursion. Our take is that RE is looking at around 100km of riding range to satisfy this criteria.
As for managing weight, all Flying Flea motorcycles will liberally use aluminium and plastic to keep the weight in check. Could you imagine a 120kg electric motorcycle from RE? Maybe Flying Flea will produce one!
Royal Enfield is clear that it is not taking the term light-weight, lightly, pun not intended. And, Flying Flea won't produce light-weight motorcycles from RE's current point of view, but light-weight motorcycles, period.
What's in a name?
Flying Flea will follow a new naming convention for its motorcycles. These will be alpha-numeric in nature. For instance, its first motorcycle will be called the C6, which will be followed by the S6. C in C6 stands for Classic, while S in S6 stands for Scrambler. The number in the meantime tells you where in the price, range, and performance hierarchy the model stands.
Flying Flea might start with the 6, but it will launch motorcycles at both ends of the scale if all goes to plan. A C4 for instance will sit under the C6 in the Classic genre in terms of price and positioning. But a C8 will be more expensive, and maybe technologically more advanced as well.
The positioning
As mentioned, Flying Flea will be RE's electric-only brand. But, not all electric motorcycles coming from Royal Enfield will be branded Flying Flea or FF. The Himalayan Electric for instance will remain a Royal Enfield. The same holds true for other big, relatively heavy electric motorcycles that might follow the Himalayan Electric.
The idea with Flying Flea motorcycles is to offer an add-on purchase option. It will be a +1 in one's garage and not the only motorcycle. It is meant for those who are looking for something that is an extension of their lifestyle. Royal Enfield believes that people will buy the FF because they are looking for something fun, and easy, but also environmentally friendly. We agree with the first two, but are not sure about the third reason. Also, after having seen the bike in the flesh, we believe many would want it because it is a beautiful-looking thing.
But, of course, we will know how people take to it once it is launched in 2026.
