Royal Enfield has launched their most awaited motorcycle, the Himalayan, for the Indian market today at Rs 1.55 lakh (ex-showroom Maharashtra). However, the company didn’t reveal the New Delhi price as the Himalayan can’t be sold there… yet.
This is because the Delhi Transport Department hasn’t given their approval for the registration of newly launched two-wheelers. However, this is limited to two-wheelers that comply with BS-III emission norms. The Himalayan has a BS-III compliant engine due to which the transport department isn’t permitting the registration for this model.
Currently, the Indian market follows BS-III emission norms for two-wheelers and BS-III and IV for passenger vehicles. As per the new rule, all new models of two-wheelers need to comply with BS-IV norms by April 1 2016. However, it is quite interesting to see the government not allowing the registration of these new models way before the deadline. Due to this, Royal Enfield can’t sell the Himalayan in New Delhi till it meets the requirements or if the government decides to revoke its order, which is highly unlikely.
A quick call to Royal Enfield revealed that the company is already working on a BS-IV compliant engine to be introduced in the market soon. But the Delhi consumers who are interested in buying the Himalayan can see the bikes in the showrooms, but no test rides will be given.
