Royal Enfield reports 14 per cent sales drop in December

- Domestic sales saw a drop of 14 per cent

- International sales increased by 41 per cent

- Workers strike at RE’s facility continues to show its effect

Royal Enfield reported that it has witnessed a 14 per cent slump in its overall sales in the month of December 2018 as compared to the same month in 2017. This includes domestic as well as international sales. Separately, domestic sales saw a drop of 14 per cent as the sales came down from 65,367 units in December 2017 to 56,026 units in 2018. However, international sales jumped from 1601 units to 2252 units, resulting in a hike of 41 per cent.

Royal Enfield witnessed a disruption in production when its workers at Oragadam facility in Chennai went on a strike which went on from 24 September to 12 November. The strike was related to low increment in wages. During the strike, RE faced a loss of production of 28,000 motorcycles and, it continues to show its negative impact since November. The three-month waiting period for its newly-launched Interceptor 650 and Continental GT 650 is an outcome of it. 

Royal Enfield recently launched the Interceptor 650 and the Continental GT 650, the former of which won the Indian Motorcycle of the Year (IMOTY) 2019 award. The company is also preparing to launch a 350cc and a 500cc Scrambler version of its Classic model.
