Sepang, the Malaysian racetrack near Kuala Lumpur, has announced a five-year contract extension with Dorna, the organiser of MotoGP. This means that we will see MotoGP races being held there until 2021.
Sepang usually holds the penultimate round of the MotoGP championship, and it is the last of the races in the Asia-Pacific region before everyone moves to Valencia in Spain for the final race of the calendar. It also hosts a common test session before the season begins. The 2017 season's test is scheduled for January 30-February 1, 2017.
Sepang was an easy decision for the authorities, as it has shown increasing attendance this year, with this week's attendance expected to be near 100,000. It was also the race that earned Valentino Rossi the penalty for a scrap with Marc Marquez last year, bringing the championship down to the final race in Valencia.
