Suzuki has filed patents for a semi-automatic transmission system for the Hayabusa in Japan, USA and Germany.
The designs reveal that the transmission uses actuators to control the clutch and gear shifts with the help of a conventional foot pedal. The system sends signals to the ECU to shift gears when the pedal is initiated. Suzuki has also equipped the system with a click mechanism to give the rider the feel of riding a traditional bike. This system is likely to be a refined, compact and efficient version of an AMT (automated manual transmission).
Since this design is simpler than Honda’s DCT system, there seems to be no need for major internal changes to the engine. Suzuki might offer the Hayabusa with this transmission as a variant. While the patents feature the semi-automatic transmission in the body of the current Hayabusa, we expect the bike to be completely revamped, both mechanically and cosmetically. The next-gen bike is also likely to get a bigger 1440cc engine.
We can expect Suzuki to unveil the 2019 Hayabusa at this year’s EICMA in Italy to mark the 20th year of the bike.
