Suzuki is going to unveil a replacement for the GSX-R1000 K7 superbike by the end of this year. Latest patent applications from the Japanese manufacturer corroborate these rumours, confirming that the next-generation model of the litre-class superbike will be christened GSX-R1000 L7.
The patent applications indicate that the GSX-R1000 L7 will carry over quite a few elements from GSX-RR MotoGP machine. It will be powered by a completely new engine with variable valve timing (VVT) engine, a technology that hasn’t been seen in superbikes before. Unlike other manufacturers whose engines are bursting with horsepower, Suzuki seems to be more concerned about improving the overall balance of the motorcycle with a chassis influenced by the GSX-RR. Reports suggest that this engine will produce close to 200 horsepower, which should be more than a handful considering that the bike will weigh less than 200 kilograms.
The GSX-R1000 has been long due for an overhaul as it hasn’t been given any major design or technological upgrade since the K7 was introduced in 2009. However, the new generation of litre-class superbikes are no longer as affordable as they used to be earlier, and customers have to shell out a huge premium for all the performance and the technological wizardry. Here is where Suzuki might turn the tables by sticking to their fundamentals of offering the best value for money.
