With the unveiling of the Versys X-300, it’s clear that Kawasaki wants to tap the growing interest in the smaller displacement adventure and touring segment. BMW unveiled their G310 GS, Suzuki V-Strom 250 is also relevant to the segment and we know that KTM is working on one as well. With so much interest by manufacturers in this segment, it’ is clear that adventure riders will now have more options. And India as a market is small but its double digit growth is what draws manufacturers. Why are we so sure that Kawasaki will bring us the Versys X-300, though?
1: Versys brand
The Indian market was introduced to this brand with the launch of the Versys 1000. This litre-class touring motorcycle did find a place in the fraternity, but the high price meant poor sales. However, that changed when the Japanese manufacturer introduced the Versys 650. This middle-weight touring motorcycle impressed us in every aspect. And because it was assembled in India, it didn’t attract a hefty price tag. These Kawasaki touring bikes have created a soft corner for adventure junkies due to which the Versys X-300 will be easily accepted by the Indian consumers. And the top-down launch approach will also work in the X-300’s favour.
2: Growing market
The lack of an affordable adventure bike didn’t let a lot of Indian buyers explore their adventure motorcycling options. Thanks to Royal Enfield, the country got the Himalayan which isn’t just affordable but very capable. So it makes perfect sense for Kawasaki to introduce the X-300 at a time when there isn’t much competition.
3: Ninja 300 sharing
The Versys X-300 gets its heart from the Ninja 300. It’s the same 296cc parallel-twin engine but in a different state of tune. This engine is tuned to deliver strong low and mid-range torque. And Kawasaki India already assembles the Ninja 300 engines in India. So there’s no investment needed to build a new assembly line.
4: Kawasaki’s aggressive expansion plan
Kawasaki plans to go aggressive with its expansion as well as its product plans. The company currently sells all their hot selling bikes in India. With the launch of the W800, Kawasaki will enter the modern-retro bike segment too. The company is also planning to go solo with its sales and service, due to which the overall cost of ownership will come down drastically. And that’s a very good thing in the long run. The Versys X-300 could get good numbers for the company and can help Kawasaki improve its market share in India.
