Suzuki had launched the Gixxer in 2014 in India. The motorcycle received subtle changes during its journey which were only limited to the addition of a new set of decals. After five years now, the Japanese bikemaker has given the motorcycle a major overhaul and we tell you the top five differences between the old and new Gixxer.
Modern aesthetics
The design of the Gixxer had started to feel long in the tooth as it had remained unchanged since its inception. Now, the new model brings along a whole new design which looks profoundly fresh. Starting from the front, the angular headlamp design has been replaced by a more minimalistic and rounded unit. The headlamp cowl and tiny visor have also been given a miss on the new version. While the fuel tank design gets subtle changes, the tank extensions are larger and sharper now. Meanwhile, the under seat cowl, split seat, grab rail and the tail lamp design have all been retained from its faired sibling, the Gixxer SF.
Upgraded features
While the updated features aren’t comprehensive, they do make the motorcycle more desirable and modern. The new Gixxer comes equipped with an all-LED headlamp, as opposed to the conventional lighting on the previous model. Furthermore, the orange backlit instrument cluster has also been replaced by a white backlit unit.
Fuel-injected motor
It was in 2016 that Suzuki had introduced fuel-injected motor for the fully-faired Gixxer SF. On the other hand, the naked version continued to be powered by a carbureted motor, until now. The new Gixxer is powered by the same 155cc, air-cooled engine but this unit is now fuel injected and churns out 14.6bhp (0.6bhp more now) and 14Nm of peak torque. Transmission duties continue to be handled by a five-speed gearbox. Notably, although the powerplant is still BS IV compliant, the inclusion of fuel injection will make it easier for Suzuki to ready it for the upcoming BS VI emission norms.
Changed dimension and weight
Coming to the difference in dimensions, while the outgoing Gixxer gets a wheelbase of 1,330mm, the figure exceeds by 5mm for the new model. Although this is minor, there’s a significant increase in seat height, which has gone up from 780mm in the previous iteration to 795mm in the new model. Lastly, the kerb weight of the Gixxer, which was 135kgs before, has also seen a hike of 5kgs on the 2019 edition.
Price hike
Suzuki has pegged the new Gixxer at Rs 1,00,212 (ex-showroom, Delhi). With a substantial hike of around Rs 12,000 over its predecessor, the new Gixxer is one of the most expensive motorcycles in the 150cc-160cc segment. However, the addition of more features, a fuel-injected engine and a new design do make it more enticing.
