Indian festivals are synonymous with the delight of bringing home new things. And a new two-wheeler is always on the wish list of most Indians. With Dussehra around the corner, if you’re planning to purchase a scooter, and a sporty one at that, here are the top five contenders you should be considering.
Starting with the oldest offering, the TVS Ntorq 125 is a great blend of sporty dynamics and modern technology. It’s one of the ideal scooters for Gen Z. While its 125cc engine has enough grunt to keep the rider entertained, its fully digital instrument cluster is Bluetooth-enabled and one of the most comprehensive amongst the scooters on this list. Interestingly, the Ntorq 125’s Race XP version takes things to a whole new level by offering two riding modes.
2. New Hero Maestro Edge 125
With the launch of the updated Maestro Edge 125 in India, Hero MotoCorp has upped its scooter game. While it retains its butch stance, the new snout-like headlamp design makes it look even more aggressive and sporty. Moreover, Hero also retails a Connected version of the scooter which brings a Bluetooth-enabled LCD console to the table. One also gets a variety of funky colour options to choose from.
3. Yamaha Ray ZR 125 Street Rally
The Yamaha Ray ZR 125 is one unique-looking scooter, especially its Street Rally version that gets additional cosmetic elements to stand apart. Although the Ray ZR’s 125cc engine doesn’t have as good a grunt as the Ntorq 125, the introduction of the new hybrid assist system should aid in improving its performance. Also, with a kerb weight of 99kg, it’s extremely light and flickable.
Do not let the maxi-styled design of the Aprilia SXR 160 confuse you. It’s a properly sporty scooter in terms of performance and handling. It might not deliver the same level of agility and punch as the SR 160, but it isn’t anywhere close to being boring. During our first ride review, the SXR 160 impressed us with a great balance of performance, handling and practicality.
The fifth on our list is the recently-launched Yamaha Aerox 155 which happens to be one of the most powerful scooters on sale in India. Its 155cc, liquid-cooled engine is derived from the R15 and it churns out 14.79bhp of power and 13.9Nm of peak torque. What’s more, it’s also one of the most radical-looking offerings with a pit scooter-like styling. It also gets a pair of large 14-inch wheels and an underbone chassis which should make it a delight to ride.
