A dearth of major two-wheeler manufacturers meant this Auto Expo wasn’t as eventful as the previous editions. However, the brands which participated had some exciting products to show. Although we have already reported about every new two-wheeler shown at the Expo, let’s take a recap of the top five attention-grabbing models including conventional as well as electric ones.
Suzuki Burgman Street MotoGP
Suzuki has launched the Burgman Street 125 back in 2018 so it’s not a new model for us. However, this Auto Expo witnessed the unveiling of the swanky MotoGP edition of the Burgman Street. While it remains identical to the standard model in terms of hardware, the body panels are adorned with Suzuki’s bold Ecstar decals seen on its MotoGP bikes. The company is likely to introduce this edition with the launch of the BS6 Burgman Street 125 this month.
Suzuki Katana
Occupying the centre stage at Suzuki’s arena was the iconic retro-inspired model, the Katana. The 999cc, in-line four cylinder motorcycle takes major design inspiration from the 1981 Katana. Harking back to the old model is the square headlamp, sharp quarter fairing, stubby tail section and the combination of black and silver paint job. When asked if Suzuki intends to bring this motorcycle to India, the company spokesperson said, depending on the demand, they could bring it here as a CKD (completely knocked down) model.
Aprilia SXR 160
The only new petrol-powered two-wheeler at the Auto Expo was unveiled by Piaggio in the form of the Aprilia SXR 160. With its maxi-scooter styling oozing a sporty appeal, the SXR fetched bucket loads of attention by consumers and enthusiasts alike. Besides the RS660-inspired front end and practical features, what compelled us was the fact that it shares its engine and underpinnings with the sport scooter, the SR 160. Piaggio will launch the SXR 160 by the third quarter of this year.
Hero Electric AE-3 three-wheeled e-scooter
Hero Electric’s AE-3 three-wheeled scooter drew as much admiration as conventional two-wheelers from the viewers. And that wasn’t only because it had an extra wheel and self-balancing feature but also due to the ample rider comfort it has on offer along with couple of interesting features. It is suspended by quad telescopic forks up front, gets a large digital display, storage bin and audio speakers at the front and a long rider seat with lower back rest. Hero is expected to launch the AE-3 three-wheeler in India but not sooner than 2021. Meanwhile, you can check out all the pictures of the AE-3 from the Expo here.
Okinawa Cruiser maxi electric scooter
Another electric two-wheeler which had the masses ogling at it was Okinawa’s electric maxi-scooter prototype, the Cruiser. The overall idea of the comfort of a maxi-scooter with an electric motor underneath compelled a lot of viewers. Although Okinawa has pitched the Cruiser as a future model, a closely similar maxi electric scooter is already on sale in China. The brand has claimed it to have an impressive range of 120kms and a top speed of 100kmph. It is also packed with a bunch of modern features. The Gurugram-based company will launch the Cruiser by the third quarter of next financial year in India.
