- Honda Activa led the charts by a huge margin
- Suzuki Access 125 and TVS Ntorq 125 registered positive growth
- Overall two-wheeler industry reported negative growth
The two-wheeler industry reported a negative growth during the recently concluded the Fiscal Year 2019-20. Apart from Suzuki Motorcycle India, most major two-wheeler brands reported negative overall sales numbers. Here we list the top five highest selling scooters during FY2019-20.
Leading the scooter sales chart by a massive margin is the Honda Activa. The Indian arm of the Japanese two-wheeler brand sold 25,91,059 units of the scooter during FY2019-20 as against 30,08,334 units in FY2018-19. The company currently offers the Activa 6G and Activa 125 in the Indian market.
TVS Motor Company took the second spot in the list of highest selling scooters for FY2019-20. The Hosur-based manufacturer sold 5,95,545 units of the Jupiter as against 7,88,417 units in FY2018-19. Unlike the Activa, the TVS Jupiter is sold in a single displacement option. However, TVS offers multiple variants of the scooter.
Suzuki Motorcycle India’s highest-selling two-wheeler, the Access 125 registered 5,70,898 unit sales during the recently concluded Fiscal Year. In comparison, the two-wheeler brand sold 5,39,123 units during FY2018-19. Suzuki is the only major two-wheeler brand that closed the Fiscal Year with positive sales performance.
The Honda Dio, which is aimed towards the young buyers, registered 4,39,799 unit sales in FY2019-20 as against 4,46,264 units in the previous Fiscal Year. The scooter managed to outrun the sales of Suzuki Access 125 during March 2020. Honda sold 29,528 units of the Dio in March 2020 as against 26,476 units of the Access 125 sold during the same period.
The TVS Ntorq 125, too, targets young buyers, and the company managed to register positive sales figures. TVS sold 2,65,012 units of the 125cc scooter during FY2019-20 as against 2,13,039 units in FY2018-19. The company is yet to launch the BS6 version of the Ntorq, although we expect to hear an official announcement soon after the lockdown is lifted (currently scheduled to end on 4 May 2020).
