Triumph Motorcycles Ltd has temporarily suspended the project for its 250cc motorcycles, citing strategic reasons. This was revealed by Mr. Paul Stroud, director of sales and marketing, Triumph, who also added that the company is going to focus on strengthening its position as a premium motorcycle manufacturer.
Triumph, the world’s largest British two-wheeler manufacturer, had previously confirmed that one naked and one fully-faired 250cc motorcycle would be ready by 2015. In 2013, the company had also released some details and a sketch of the faired motorcycle. Both the naked and fully-faired motorcycles have been spotted testing in Europe, but now it seems the company has changed its priorities.
Speaking to VisorDown, Mr. Paul, said, “Following a review we have placed the 250cc bike project on hold for strategic reasons relating to its specific segment. Through our expanding market presence and model offer we will continue to evolve our product range to reinforce our position as a premium motorcycle manufacturer and answer the requirements and demands of a global motorcycle audience with exciting and innovative products.”
While the faired motorcycle was styled to look like the Daytona 675, the naked motorcycle was clearly inspired by the Street Triple. Both these new motorcycles were planned to be manufactured at the company’s production facility in Narsapur, Andhra Pradesh. Triumph’s entry into the quarter-litre segment was something that the emerging markets, especially India, were looking forward to. With the plans now put on hold, it seems that the enthusiasts will have to look at other middleweights like the Kawasaki Z250, Kawasaki 250SL and the Honda CBR250R.
