Triumph has dropped plans to set a manufacturing unit at Karnataka. The British motorcycle manufacturer had proposed to set up a plant in Karnataka but has decided to scrap plans due to the lack of cooperation from the government.
The proposed manufacturing unit was to be set up on a 30-acre plot at Narasapura industrial area in Kolar district, 50km from the capital – Bengaluru. The plant was to be set up with an investment of Rs 850 crore in two phases. The initial manufacturing capacity of the plant was 2,50,000 motorcycles per year, which Triumph said would create employment opportunities for thousands. The plan was passed in 2012 but hasn’t managed to make progress due to land-related issues the government is failing to sort.
Triumph only produces motorcycles over the 500cc capacity mark and still manages to move a lot of bikes every year. With the new plant, British manufacturer is aiming at taking the top position in India’s performance market. According to reports, the company has now chosen to set up their plant at Manesar in Haryana.
Meanwhile, Triumph is now looking for a refund on the investments made on the Narasapura plant in Karnataka. Triumph does have an assembly plant already set up in India, but this manufacturing plant will make all the difference and reduce prices of the motorcycles significantly for the Indian market.
