Triumph Speed 400 vs Triumph Speed T4: Key differences

The Triumph Speed T4 is the company’s new and most affordable motorcycle to go on sale in India. The bike is based on the Speed 400 which has also received a few updates. Here are some of the key differences between the two bikes.

The engines

The Triumph Speed 400 has a 399cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine that makes 39.5bhp at 8,000rpm and 37.5Nm at 6,500rpm. The engine is paired with a six-speed gearbox. This engine loves to rev and has decent punch both in the mid and top end.

The Speed T4 targets a different audience. One that wants a more relaxed and easy-to-ride experience. While its engine is based on the Speed 400’s engine, it makes 30.6bhp at 7,000rpm and 36Nm at 5,000rpm. Triumph claims that the rideability of the Speed T4 is better than the Speed 400, especially in the confines of a city, given the strong bottom end of the engine. 85 percent of the 36Nm is available from 2,500rpm only.

Suspension

One major difference between the Speed 400 and the Speed T4 is that the former gets a more premium, USD fork, replete with a gold colour on the outer tubes. The latter has a more conventional right side up telescopic fork. Besides the cost difference between the two, there will be a small difference in the way these motorcycles ride and handle.

Tyres and electronics

The Speed T4 is the more affordable option of the two and hence some of the components are not upto the same level as the Speed 400.

The ‘T4’ rides on MRF Zapper, bias-ply tyres. The Speed 400, on the other hand, rides on Vredestein tyres which are of the radial type. These tyres are also of a higher profile than the ones on the Speed T4.

Triumph has also omitted the traction control system from the features list of the Speed T4.
