Triumph is planning to expand the Bonneville range of modern classics with a new model, expected to be christened as Speed Twin. A streetfighter version of the Thruxton, the Speed Twin was recently spotted undergoing trials in Europe.
The Speed Twin is an iconic moniker that was used by the British marque in 1950s and 1960s for its 500cc road bikes. The modern iteration though will be powered by a 1200cc ‘high power’ engine churning out 112Nm of torque. The double cradle frame has been borrowed from the Thruxton R, and so are the upswept exhaust pipes. Even the Ohlins suspension setup and Brembo brakes are similar to the Thruxton R.
What sets it apart though is the styling. The twin-eye headlamp has been inspired by the previous generation Speed Triple. The riding position has also been revised thanks to a taller straight handlebar and revised seating. It also uses cast alloy wheels in place of the retro spoke wheels on the Thruxton R.
The Triumph Speed Twin is expected to be unveiled next year as a 2018 model and we can expect it to be launched here by end of 2017. It will compete with the likes of the Ducati Monster 1200, Aprilia Tuono 1100 V4 and the BMW S1000R.
