TVS Apache RTR 160 ABS vs Bajaj Pulsar NS160- Competition Check

The TVS Apache RTR 160 is now equipped with a single-channel ABS unit. It is now a step ahead of its biggest rival, the Bajaj Pulsar NS160 which doesn’t get ABS. We find out how the bikes fare against each other in this on-paper comparison.

Design

The TVS Apache RTR 160 ABS and the Bajaj Pulsar NS160 are both streetfighters with a sporty intent. While the Apache RTR 200 has got a new face, the Apache RTR 160 has remained the same for a long time. That however, does not mean that the bike has lost its charm. It still is a head-turner thanks to the aggressive headlamp setup with LED DRLs and sharp tank extensions. The edgy engine cowl and the sculpted rear end on the Apache RTR 160 ABS is icing on the cake.

The Bajaj Pulsar NS160 has a sharp styling too. The bike’s low-slung headlamp and muscular tank merges well with the sharp tail section that houses a split-tail lamp. The Pulsar NS 160 also gets a split-seat setup that further voices its sporty intent.

Engine

Powering the TVS Apache RTR 160 ABS is a 160cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled, two-valve engine. This carburetted motor generates 15bhp at 8,500rpm and 13Nm of torque at 6,000 rpm. It comes mated to a five-speed gearbox.

Meanwhile, the Bajaj Pulsar NS160 uses a 160cc, single-cylinder, oil-cooled, four-valve motor. Similar to the Apache RTR 160 ABS, it also is a carburetted unit although it produces slightly higher 15.3bhp at 8,500rpm and 14.6Nm of torque at 6.500rpm. The Pulsar NS160’s engine is also mated to a five-speed gearbox.

Cycle Parts

Both, the TVS Apache RTR 160 ABS and Bajaj Pulsar NS160 are offered in two variants with varied braking hardware. And both the variants on the Apache RTR 160 ABS get a 270mm front disc brake. However, at the rear there is the option of a 130mm drum and 200mm disc brake with a single-channel ABS available on both versions.

The Bajaj Pulsar NS160 dual-disc variant gets a 260mm front and 230mm rear disc brake. However, the front disc version gets a smaller 240mm disc and a 130mm rear drum brake. Bajaj hasn’t updated the NS160 with an ABS unit.

Suspension duties on the Apache RTR 160 ABS and Pulsar NS160 are handled by telescopic front forks and a monoshock at the rear. The bikes ride on 17-inch alloy wheels on both ends shod with tubeless tyres.

Pricing

TVS has priced the Apache RTR 160 ABS with front disc at Rs 86,969 while the ABS with rear disc version costs Rs 89,589. On the other hand, the Bajaj Pulsar NS160 single-disc retails at Rs 82,624 and the dual-disc variant costs Rs 85,690. While the Pulsar NS160 is more affordable now, it will be priced slightly higher when it comes equipped with an ABS unit.
