TVS has upgraded the Jupiter with few cosmetic and mechanical changes, calling it the Grande edition. These changes put it on par with its biggest rival, the Honda Activa 5G. We see how the scooters stack up against each other in this on-paper comparison.
Design and Features
The TVS Jupiter Grande does not stray away from the standard variant and similar to the Honda Activa 5G, sports a conservative design. However, both manufacturers have added touches of chrome on the scooters to make them look premium. While the Jupiter Grande gets the shiny element on its front fender and mirrors, the Activa gets two chrome strips on its front apron.
The Jupiter Grande and Activa 5G offer a full-LED headlamp although the Jupiter gets an LED tail lamp too. The Jupiter Grande gets a unique stitch-like pattern on its brown seat with a beige floorboard and handlebar. On the other hand, the Activa 5G’s black seat, floorboard and handlebar look plain-Jane.
The Jupiter Grande is equipped with an analogue speedometer and a small digital unit that displays fuel level, odometer, trip meter and clock as standard. However, the Activa 5G offers the same only on the DLX variant. The Activa 5G and the Jupiter Grande get two hooks in the front for convenience. While the Activa 5G gets a seat opener switch next to the ignition slot and a conventional underseat fuel filler cap, the Jupiter’s external fuel filler cap can be accessed through a key slot on the left side panel that also acts as a boot opener.
Engine
The Jupiter Grande is powered by the same 109cc, single-cylinder engine from the standard variant. This unit produces 8bhp and 8Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the Honda Activa 5G is also powered by a 109cc, single-cylinder engine which puts out 8bhp and slightly higher, 9Nm of torque.
Cycle parts
The Jupiter Grande rides on 5-spoke, 12-inch wheels while the Activa 5G makes do with 10-inch steel wheels; both shod with tubeless tyres. The Jupiter also gets conventional telescopic forks which are a stark upgrade over the Activa’s leading link suspension. At the rear, both scooters ride on a monoshock suspension.
TVS is offering the Jupiter Grande with a drum brake as standard as well as an optional front disc brake setup. Honda however offers the Activa only with a drum brake. On the other hand, both scooters get a combined braking system as standard. The Jupiter Grande sports a 5-litre fuel tank while the Honda gets a larger 5.3 litre fuel tank capacity.
Pricing
The Honda Activa is offered in two variants; standard and DLX (with semi-digital display) priced at Rs 53,865 and Rs 55,730 respectively. TVS has priced the drum variant of the Jupiter Grande at Rs 55,936 while the disc variant retails at Rs 59,648.
