July has turned out to be a good month for TVS as the company clinched the third spot in the Indian two-wheeler industry. Driven by the demand for its commuter motorcycles, the Hosur-based manufacturer sold 2.06 lakh two-wheelers in the last month, outdoing its closest rival, Bajaj Auto Limited by 8,583 units.
While Bajaj did register a steep 20 per cent growth in July, this wasn’t enough to counter TVS’s performance. The number would have been even higher, had it not been for the significant decline in export numbers, which has been affecting Bajaj’s growth since the past few months. The 20 per cent drop in export numbers can be attributed to the slowdown in Africa and Latin America region. TVS has also been suffering from a decline in overseas demand, though the drop isn’t as significant as it is in Bajaj’s case.
With the monsoon bringing a positive outlook among buyers, we can expect the upward growth trend to continue among two-wheeler manufacturers. In the domestic market, TVS experienced a 23 per cent growth in motorcycle sales while the scooter segment saw no change in volumes. The domestic market remains favourable for Bajaj as the recently launched V15 and CT100 have set the cash registers ringing. The Puslar RS200 has majorly assisted in building Bajaj's sporty image, and the company has now pinned its hopes on the Pulsar brand to give it a boost in sales numbers, though it remains to be seen whether this would be enough to help it regain the third position.
