Valentino Rossi opened the 2015 season of MotoGP with a spectacular victory at the Grand Prix of Qatar. The 36-year old Movistar Yamaha rider lifted his 109th Grand Prix trophy earlier this week at the Losail by trouncing Andrea Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone.
Riding the 2015 Yamaha YZR-M1, Rossi started eighth on the grid and was pushed back to the 10th place by the first lap. However, he steadily moved forward until he caught up with Ducati riders Dovizioso and Iannone. The race saw a sensational duel between Rossi and Dovizioso, though by the end of the race, the Ducati rider had to settle for the second position. Rossi’s teammate Jorge Lorenzo came in fourth, behind Iannone.
Honda rider Marc Marquez started the race in the third position, though a mistake in the first corner made him run wide, pushing him right to the back of the grid. Despite this setback, Marc slowly climbed up the rankings, finishing the race in fifth position.
Commenting on his victory, Rossi said, "This was one of the best victories for me. The bike was fantastic, I never gave up but it was a real fight with the Ducatis and the Hondas who were really strong. The second part of the race was really good and I'm very happy because we had difficulties in testing and practice but my experience helped today. I'm so happy for me, for the team and for Yamaha.”
