Piaggio India will launch their ultra-premium scooter, the Vespa 946, in the next two to three months. The scooter that is known for its incredible design language has passed the homologation process and will be sold in India in a staggering price range of Rs 8 lakh and Rs 9 lakh.
The information was confirmed by the company's top official during the launch of the Vespa S this week. The Vespa 946 will be sold through exclusive Vespa dealerships via completely-built-up (CBU) route. At such a price point it becomes a ‘not-so logical’ buy. But the company is clear that it targets collectors who are looking at a niche vehicle.
This super premium scooter is powered by a single cylinder 150cc four stroke engine with catalytic converter and electronic fuel injection engine. This engine is mated to a continuous variable transmission (CVT) gearbox. The Vespa 946 uses metal body with welded reinforcements and aluminum and is built with the absence of robotics. From the first stitching on the leather handle grips to the final polish, everything is done by hand; making it a unique offering from the Italian manufacturer.
The Vespa 946 is loaded with technology like the LED front head lamp that sports thermal dissipation system, ABS with ASR traction control, an advanced electronic system which prevents slippage of the rear wheel, avoiding loss of adhesion.
"Vespa 946 scooter, which will be priced at Rs 8-9 lakh, is aimed at the collectors and the people who are passionate about such offerings. It is the essence of style and design. It is hand-crafted with the latest technology. We hope to introduce the scooter as completely built unit in the next two-three months," said Ravi Chopra, MD, Piaggio India.
