- Piaggio scooter sales up by 36.4 per cent in Q1 2018
- Business grew by 29.8 per cent
- Growth spearheaded by jump in Vespa sales
Piaggio has announced a 36.4 per cent growth in scooter sales in India in the first quarter of 2018. The company sold over 18,300 Vespa and Aprilia scooters in the January to March period in 2018 as compared to the 13,400 scooters sold in the corresponding period in 2017.
Globally, Piaggio’s two-wheeler sales have been experiencing a slump. Despite the 36.4 per cent growth recorded in India, the global number fell from 82,400 units to 80,500 units, translating to a drop of 2.7 per cent. Business of Piaggio’s scooter division in India grew from EUR 10.8 million to EUR 14 million in the corresponding period. This marks a 29.8 per cent growth. Globally, the business dropped by 4.1 per cent.
The Vespa scooter range has played an important role in the growth in the Indian market. Although Vespa had been struggling with stagnant sales numbers for quite some time, the SR 150 turned out to be a runaway success. This led to a significant increase in footfalls in the showroom, which in turn helped boost the sales of the Vespa range. Right now, Vespa sales are almost twice as much as the Aprilia scooter sales.
