Yamaha believes there’s a huge market for three-wheeled motorcycles. So after launching the Tricity commuter in 2014, it went on to showcase another leaning multi-wheeler (LMW) concept, the Niken. And looks like, the company isn’t just stopping there.
Yoshihiro Hidaka, president and CEO, Yamaha confirmed its intention of building more LMW vehicles that will hit the market in the next few years. He revealed this information at the announcement of company’s annual business results.
“Since the launch of Tricity commuter in 2014 we continued R&D activities and in the last year’s Tokyo Motor Show we have presented large size sports model Niken, which will be launched in the market this year. Not just limited to these two models we will be expanding customer base with new values of LMW," he said.
Interestingly, in the presentation there was an image where there was a blurred-out model sitting between the Tricity and the Niken. This makes us believe that the Japanese manufacturer is readying a middle-weight three-wheeled motorcycle. This product could possibly be based on the 321cc parallel-twin motor that’s seen on the YZF-R3.
We’re expecting a concept version of this upcoming Yamaha to be revealed either at this year’s Intermot or EICMA. Unfortunately, LMV vehicles won’t ever come to India as there’s no market for such vehicles.
