Yamaha wants its future trail bike riders to use less fossil fuels and switch to much cleaner fuel. To accomplish this, the company is developing an electric dirt bike which should hit the international markets in the next few years.
The information of the electric dirt bike was leaked through patent images. The world knows about Yamaha’s PED2 electric dual-sport concept that was unveiled at 2015 Tokyo Motor Show. But the bike in the patent images are quite different from the concept. As per the images, the battery has been placed low on the bike, to keep the centre of gravity low. The rear suspension has been linked to the wheel hub which is quite interesting.
While the overall body proportions and the frame looks somewhat identical to the PED2 concept, the placement of the rear mono shock (which is at the rear) in the patent images makes us believe that this is a different motorcycle the Japanese manufacturer is currently working on. The mudguard, body panels and the seat looks familiar to the ones on Yamaha’s famous YZ series.
Most of the automotive manufacturers are developing electric vehicles. The world wants to switch to cleaner fuel to reduce carbon footprints, however, the complete transition will take many years, maybe even decades. But developing electric vehicles right now, when the acceptance level is low, will eventually help the manufacturers in the future.
