Yamaha eyes 50 lakh production capacity in India by 2020

Yamaha India is aiming to have 50 lakh production capacity in India in next seven years. To achieve this, the company is considering to set up new manufacturing plants in the country.

Currently the Japanese manufacturer has a manufacturing plant in Greater Noida and Faridabad. The former primarily produces two wheelers whereas the latter brings out spare parts only. The company, however, has postponed building the Chennai manufacturing plant by a year due to economic slowdown in the country. The plant that attracted investment of Rs 1,500 crore was supposed to start production early next year but now is expected to be operational by the end of 2014 or early 2015.

Yamaha India is aiming to achieve 10 per cent market share in both motorcycles and scooter segments combined. Currently, the Japanese motorcycle maker has a market share of five per cent in the scooter segment and three per cent in the motorcycle segment. In order to strengthen its portfolio, the company is currently developing a scooter and a commuter motorcycle that will be launched in India by 2016.

"We are eyeing a production capacity of five million units by 2020. For that, we would require more manufacturing plants in the country," explained Hiroyuki Suzuki, CEO, India Yamaha Motor.
