India Yamaha Motor is aiming to achieve 10 per cent market share in the scooter segment this year, which is the fastest growing two-wheeler segment in India.
Yamaha India currently has seven per cent market share in the Indian scooter segment and with the help of its three models, the Ray, Ray Z and the Alpha, it wants to gain additional market shares. The scooter segment is currently pegged at three lakh units per month and the Japanese manufacturer sells around 23,000 scooters per month. Honda leads the segment with 19,02,859 units which is followed by Hero MotoCorp at 6,90,079 scooters.
"Currently, we are doing around 23,000 units of scooters a month. In the next few months we are aiming to get around 10 per cent market share in the vertical as our products are now well established in the market," said Roy Kurian, vice president, sales and marketing, India Yamaha Motor.
According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, the scooter segment has grown impressively in the country clocking a 23.24 per cent increase at 36,02,744 units in 2013-14 at a time when other sectors in the Indian automobile industry suffered from a prolonged demand slump. It makes a lot of sense for the Indian auto manufacturers to focus more on the scooter segment due to its economic value and practicality.
The aim of achieving 10 per cent doesn't sound very difficult, considering the fact that Yamaha is already sitting at seven percent. But let’s not forget about other manufacturers who are strengthening their scooter portfolio, especially Hero MotoCorp who shocked everyone with the new scooters at the 2014 Auto Expo. We are also sure; Honda India won’t take this segment slightly, even after leading the segment.
