Reports suggest that Yamaha has filed patents with the European and US Patent Office for a leaning electric three-wheeler. This new scooter might be based on the existing Yamaha EC-03 electric scooter seen in Europe.
Yamaha recently unveiled the Tricity which has two wheels in the front and one at the rear. However, the new leaning electric trike will underpin the traditional architecture. This means, the scooter will get two wheels at the rear and one at the front. A unique feature of this scooter, for which the manufacturer has filed patents for, will be that it will be able to lean. The patents focus on the electric motor controller and decreasing the weight of the battery and extra wheel.
Yamaha might power the new leaning scooter with the same motor from the EC-03 electric scooter. The EC-03‘s motor develops 1.8PS of power at 2550rpm and 9.6Nm of torque at only 280rpm. We might be able to see this leaning electric trike soon, since this platform is already in production and it wouldn’t take time for Yamaha to further develop this scooter. Also due to its minimal design and lightweight 50V/15Ah lithium-ion battery the company will be able to keep the weight as less as 56kg.
It is most likely that the manufacturer plans to upgrade its range of electric scooters and will add this new electric leaning three-wheeled scooter to its portfolio. There are not enough electric scooters in India currently, and if Yamaha plans to bring it to India, whether the scooter will enjoy a good demand or not is something too early to discuss. But we think it will definitely create some excitement and Indians will welcome such products to the Indian soil.
