- Yamaha MT-15 sales drop by 33 per cent last month
- Sells 740 units lesser than the KTM 125 Duke
The Yamaha MT-15 was launched in India in March, entering the market with a bang and selling around 5,200 units in the first month itself.
However, the street fighter has seen a considerable decline in sales since. For June, the MT-15 registered a sale of 1,368 units which is a 33 per cent decline as compared to May wherein Yamaha sold 2,048 units of the motorcycle. As for April, the company sold 3,823 MT-15s in the market.
In comparison, the KTM 125 Duke sold 2,108 units in June which is a difference of 740 units from the Yamaha MT-15’s sales figure. This could be due to the fact that the MT-15 is a completely new product in the market whereas the Duke 125, although a new motorcycle, is part of a recognised lineage in India. Also, the design and components of the Duke 125 are directly borrowed from the Duke 200, making consumers perceive the 125 Duke as a more aspirational and better spec product.
Notably, the Indian motorcycle market has seen an overall decline in sales which could be attributed to the economy in the country. It could also be due to the upcoming BS-VI norms wherein motorcycles and scooters are likely to be offered with more features to justify their increase in price.
