The existence of Yamaha’s new quarter-litre naked motorcycle has been confirmed thanks to the latest set of spy shots from Indonesia. These pictures show the ‘MT-25’ moniker adorning the side cowl of the motorcycle, ratifying the speculations that the motorcycle will be christened MT-25.
Being based on the YZF-R25, the MT-25 is expected to share many mechanical components with quarter-litre supersports motorcycle. [FV1] The MT-25 is based on the same lightweight diamond-type semi-trellis steel frame from the R25 and is powered by the same 250cc parallel-twin engine. This engine delivers 35.5bhp and 22.1Nm of torque through a six-speed gearbox, though the engine characteristics might be tuned to suit the naked motorcycle’s demeanour.
While the rear section is identical to the R25, the front seems to be styled along the lines of the elder MT motorcycles. The MT-25 will compete with other small capacity naked motorcycles like the Kawasaki Z250, Benelli TNT 250 and the Suzuki Inazuma 250.
Reports suggest that the MT-25 has almost reached production stage and that it will be launched in Indonesia in the next couple of months. And while our wait for the YZF-R25 (or will it be the YZF-R3?) continues, the chances of the MT-25 being launched here in this year seem very bleak.
