Yamaha planning to make global models in India

Yamaha is planning to make India their manufacturing hub to build and export bikes to global markets. The Japanese bike maker is currently doing a feasibility study to check if the project will be financially viable.

The Japanese maker is planning to develop and build commuter motorcycles ranging between 100cc and 200cc in India and export it to some European countries, Japan and to emerging markets like South Africa. Yamaha is already exporting the FZ series and the YZF R15 motorcycles to their home country in Japan.

Business wise it makes sense to manufacture products in India as the operating and overhead costs in India are quite low as compared to many other countries. This will directly help Yamaha to price their product competitively in global markets.

"India is a low-cost market, but we are not looking at just that. We want to develop sporty and stylish models from here and these would be for European markets and Asian markets." said Hiroyuki Yanagi, president and CEO, Yamaha Motor Company.
