- Y16ZR moped launched in Malaysia
- Based on the same platform as the YZF R15 V3
- Unlikely to be launched in India
It’s an undeniable truth that the platform on which the Yamaha YZF R15 V3 is based is extremely potent. And that’s the reason Yamaha has been using it to spawn a range of products. The sharp and distinctive Y16ZR moped you see in these pictures is one of them. It has recently been launched in Malaysia with a price tag of RM 10,888 (approximately Rs 1.91 lakh). In December last year, Yamaha had launched this same moped in Vietnam where it is called the Exciter.
Sitting under its stonkingly sporty body work is the familiar 155cc engine which does duty on the YZF R15 V3 we have here in India. This VVA-equipped mill churns out 17.5bhp and 14.4Nm in the Y16ZR that is closely similar to the R15’s 18.3bhp and 14.1Nm. And guess what, despite being a moped, the Y16ZR incorporates a six-speed gearbox with assist and slipper clutch.
Yamaha has also equipped this moped with quite a few modern features. It gets full-LED lighting along with an LCD console that shows information like speed, RPM, operational gear, VVA activation and more. Moreover, the Y16ZR also sports a 12 V charging socket and Yamaha Smart Lock with call back function and immobilizer and a 5.4-litre fuel tank.
The chances of Yamaha launching the Y16ZR in India is profoundly slim since there’s no market for moped here. However, if we get lucky, we might get the NMax 155 scooter in the near future that is another product powered by the same 155cc engine as the R15.
