Yamaha has issued a recall for its three-cylinder motorcycles – the MT-09, FJ-09 and the XSR900. The recall affects 22,433 units sold in the US between 2015 and 2017.
The Yamaha MT-09, FJ-09 and the XSR900 have been recalled to fix an issue with the handlebar. On the affected motorcycles, incorrect application of paint on the handlebar holder has led to insufficient thread-locking agent. On these bikes, the handlebar holder can get damaged in case of an impact. This can lead to the stud bolt getting loosened and the handlebar coming off, leading to a crash.
Yamaha has started contacting owners to replace the lower handlebar holder for free for the affected motorcycles. We are awaiting a comment from Yamaha on whether the MT-09 motorcycles sold in India are covered under this recall.
