Yamaha India has opened its second research and development centre in the country. With an investment of Rs 66 crore, this new facility will help Yamaha bring out more products that will fit the Indian and global customer requirements.
Located inside the premises of Yamaha’s Kanchipuram factoryin Tamil Nadu, this new facility will also conduct prototype testing and validation. There’s also a test track that has the simulation of the Indian roads conditions. This will help the Japanese manufacturer build a product that can survive the Indian roads.
Yamaha has committed to invest Rs 1,500 crore by 2018 under ‘Make in India’ initiative and this new facility is a part of that plan. The company is currently focusing on extending its market share in the mass market segment. The launch of the Saluto RX – first bike from the Project INDRA, is an attempt to gain more sales in that segment.
“The objective of the new Centre is to develop models for India and eventually, the Global market. The Chennai Centre shall be the second main pillar for YMRI. By collaboration with the current development power in Surajpur centre, we aim to strengthen more of the cost reduction and attractive product development in the Chennai centre. The key role of this India Integrated Development Centre is to develop optimised specifications for the Indian market," said Yasuo Ishihara, managing director, Yamaha Motor Research & Development India.
