The Yamaha YZF R15-S has been launched in Nepal at NR 3.34 lakh (Rs 2.09 lakh), unofficially confirming the existence of this entry-level version of the 150cc motorcycle.
Earlier this month, a leaked photo of the Yamaha YZF R15-S has fuelled rumours about Yamaha’s plans of launching a new cheaper version of the YZF R15 during the festive season. This motorcycle was reported to carry the mechanicals of the R15 Version 2.0, though its body bore a striking resemblance to the first-generation model which was launched in 2008. And while it then seemed like the work of a photoshop expert, the YZF R15-S’ launch in Nepal has provided the crucial concrete evidence.
Unlike the YZF R15 Version 2.0, the YZF R15-S sports an elongated single-piece seat, which has taken care of the bike’s Achilles heel. Though the Version 2.0 looks sportier than the previous model, the tall rear seat makes it very impractical for the pillion and has been the biggest handicap of the motorcycle. The body panels and the fairing are similar to the original YZF R15 though other components like the exhaust, suspension, brakes and other greasy bits have been carried over from the Version 2.0.
In Nepal, the Yamaha YZF R15-S is Rs 5,000 cheaper than the Version 2.0, and we can expect a similar price difference in the Indian market too. The YZF R15-S will be launched here in the next few weeks, during the festive season.
