In the past few days, not one, but two new supersport motorcycles were launched in the 300-400cc segment – the Aprilia RS457 and the Yamaha YZF-R3. Both these bikes are arch rivals and in this story, we have compared them on paper.
Design
The Yamaha R3 takes design inspiration from other bikes in its line-up. It gets split LED headlights with a duct in between and a transparent visor above. The overall design of the R3 is aggressive and youthful, thanks to the cuts and creases on the fairing. On the other hand, the Aprilia RS457 is a thorough derivative of the larger RS660. It, too, features split LED headlights and a visor but looks much sleeker and more modern than the R3. Then, the RS457 seems to have a smaller wheelbase as well.
Features
The R3 gets LED illumination, LCD, dual-channel ABS, and a side-stand sensor. On the other hand, the RS457 comes loaded with a bunch of rider aids. It gets LED illumination, engine maps, traction control, ABS, anti-roll system, three riding modes, and a five-inch TFT. Here, the Aprilia offering has the upper hand.
Engine
Powering the R3 is a 321cc parallel-twin cylinder that makes 41.4bhp at 10,750rpm and 29.5Nm at 9,000rpm. It is linked to a six-speed gearbox. Meanwhile, Aprilia has powered the RS457 with a 457cc twin-cylinder engine that belts out 47.6bhp at 9,400rpm and 43.5Nm at 6,700rpm. It, too, is linked to a six-speed gearbox. Even here, the RS457 takes the cookie.
Hardware
The R3 rides on USD front forks and a monoshock, while its brakes include a 298mm front and a 220mm rear disc. It gets dual-channel ABS and 17-inch wheels wrapped in Dunlop tyres. On the other hand, Aprilia has equipped the RS457 with a preload-adjustable front and rear shock and a disc at both ends.
Price
The asking price for the Yamaha YZF-R3 is Rs. 4,64,900, whereas the Aprilia RS457 costs Rs. 4,10,000 (both ex-showroom, Delhi). This makes the Aprilia RS457 a better value-for-money proposition on paper.
