Yamaha has unveiled the YZF-R15 Version 3.0 in Indonesia. Featuring cosmetic updates, new features and a significant jump in power, the new R15 is expected to reach our shores by mid-2017.
The most noticeable changes are cosmetic. The fairing of the YZF-R15 has been redesigned with a twin-headlamp unit similar to the YZF-R3, while the tail section now resembles the M-Slaz. The headlamp gets LED units. The instrumentation has been redesigned, and now displays gear position, average speed and a shift light. The exhaust end can and the alloy wheels also get a new design.
Under the skin, the new YZF-R15 gets a 155cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine, now delivering 19bhp and 14.7Nm of torque. This output is 2bhp more than the outgoing model, though the torque figure is the same as before. The engine is mated to a six-speed gearbox with slipper clutch. It rides on inverted front forks as opposed to the current bike’s conventional telescopic units.
With the competition catching up, it was about time that Yamaha upgraded this entry-level supersports model. In India, the Yamaha YZF-R15 Version 3.0 competes with the likes of the KTM RC200, Bajaj Pulsar RS200 and the Honda CBR150R.
