Yamaha has launched the YZF-R3 at Rs 3.25 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) for the Indian market. This makes the R3 the first quarter-litre product from Yamaha to make its way to India officially.
The YZF-R3 borrows styling cues from the R25, but gets a bigger mill to compete with the Kawasaki Ninja 300. The sporty twin-headlamps, the air duct in the middle and LED tail lamps differentiate the R3 from the rest of the Yamaha YZF range and other quarter-litre bikes.
The Japanese manufacturer is marketing the YZF-R3 as ‘a bike you can ride every day’. The YZF-R3 is powered by an eight-valve 321cc four-stroke parallel-twin engine which produces 42bhp of peak power and 29.6Nm of torque, making the YZF-R3 one of the most powerful motorcycles in the segment. Power is delivered to the rear wheel through a six-speed manual transmission.
The Yamaha YZF-R3 will be sold in India as a completely-knocked-down (CKD) unit and will be available only in a non-ABS variant. Yamaha would have had our appreciation if they had brought the ABS version to India, but that would have increased the price of the bike by at least Rs 30,000.
The Yamaha YZF-R3 will compete with the Kawasaki Ninja 300, however, it is priced Rs 40,000 cheaper than the latter. In case of the KTM RC390, the YZF-R3 is priced Rs 90,000 higher. The YZF-R3 will be sold in India through selected dealerships and deliveries will start in next two weeks.
