  • Tvs apache rtr 160 - a best first bike for young India

    Keshava G N

I'm writing this review about tvs apache rtr 160 (2011 model, disc brake at front and drum at the rear).I had bought this bike in 2016 as second owner of a 5 years old bike. My need was to learn the bike riding properly (i knew riding in village roads and roads where there's less traffic, but not in bengaluru roads). So, brought this for rs. 32,000/- with faulty battery. Replaced the battery for around rs. 2000/-. So, the total price was approximately rs. 34,000/-.Below are my views based on daily commutes for 1 and half years, around 30 kms daily, and occasional weekend rides of once or twice a month, and approximately 200 kms per rides near bengaluru. I didn't buy from any dealer/company. I bought a used bike. It was smooth, and done in a day. Registrations were done easily. This is my first bike. My previous experience was riding 100cc bikes and gearless bikes in village roads. I started riding in bengaluru on this bike. Initially i struggled using the bike, and even did a small accident initially. I had hit to a compound and broke the headlamp assembly! replaced it and costed around 2000 rs.Coming to actual riding experience, got used to the bike within a month and even started going for small weekend rides. Compared to other bikes owned by friends, this was really good when comes to the riding experience. The next 1 year of riding this bike made me an apache fan boy, as friends call me! the things that i like in this bike are: a. The low end torque - this is the best 160cc bike for bengaluru city commute. The way it revs up and starts initially is awesome. If you are in the front line of a signal, as soon as it turns green, just revv the bike and bamm, you will be long gone beating all other bikes. B. The manoeuvring capability in city traffic - the only bike that beats this beast frequently in day to day commute is ktm! :) this is highly aggressive in city, thanks to the low end torque. C. Seating posture- it's not a fully aggressive, but a bit leaned to front. This is not very comfortable bike in the range, but not too bad in 160cc segment. Initially feared that this might give me back pains, but to my surprise, i didn't had any problems in last 1.5 years. D. Fuel efficiency - though this is more than 6 years old rtr, it gives 40 kmpl to 45 kmpl of mileage easily. This has been ridden for more than 50,000 kms totally. But this mileage is impressive, according to me, for this years old bike!E. Looks - though looks are subjective, i like this most in 160cc segment. Now there are better looking bikes such as rtr 160 4v, gixxer etc. But i guess this was the best looking budget bike back in 2011-12!Servicing and maintenance: as this was old bike, i didn't had free service in tvs service centres. Most of the time i serviced this in local mechanic shops. I used two shops which are nearer to my house and my office. Both were smooth, each charged around rs. 400/- to rs. 500/- and occasional oil changes. I usually lubricate the chain myself.Pros:1. Low end torque. 2. Aggressive city bike. 3. Looks. 4. Fuel efficiency. 5. Cornering capability and city manoeuvring capability. 6. Good performer in the segment. Goes above 110 kmph in highways easily.Cons:1. Vibrations vibrations vibrations! this is the biggest disadvantage in rtr 160. It starts vibrating at as low as 60kmph! this stays all the way till 110 kmph or 120 kmph. Though it's not much noticeable in higher speeds (or it's allowed above 100 kmph for 160cc bike), vibrations at 60 kmph is highly negative in my bike. It gives numbness to both of the hands within riding for 1 hour.Good thing is tvs has rectified this long standing problem in it's newer line of bikes : 160 4v and 200 4v. I had test ridden these bikes, and might upgrade to 200 4v real soon!2. Pillion comfort - not really comfortable for pillion.3. Not very comfortable seating posture. Though not highly uncomfortable though.4. Heating issue is not there, but the engine heats up a bit in city riding after an hour of riding. The upgraded version tvs apache rtr 160 4v which has solved most of the cons above, must be go for bike in segment!

    1. Buying Experience - My buying experience was good. I buy Apache RTR 160 in Jan 2018 . Now i guess Price is increased comparing than before but its applicable on Every Bike.
    2. Riding experience - So far the experience has been fantastic. it's a different fun to run. But there are some problems too, Like we all know about Apache Vibration issue, Chain Sprocket issue.
    3. I love Its look, i quite simple and classy look in this budget. i love its Headlight experience. Performance is good. But When you crossed 50-60 you can easily feel vibration. Mileage is not bad, my bike give 37 - 40 avg. There are not many problems. If you maintain proper your bike then your bike will not have any major problem.
4.Servicing differs as per area. My servicing experience was okay (not good, nor bad). Maintenance is Not too much, you can easily maintain this bike. but Its Spare parts is Quite costly rather than other bikes in this segment so its an issue.
    5. Pros- Pickup, Look, Affordable.
Cons - vibration, Chain Sprocket, Comfort ability issue.
If you are looking for Sports bike with family, pickup lover then just go for it. Little problems (which every bike have), vibration issue... after all its a complete Package.

1 - buying experience is good 2- riding experience is awesome 3- perfect look 4- service and maintenance is good 5 - overall good for money. The claimed arai mileage for the tvs apache rtr 160 petrol is 45-50 kmpl. The midst of growing competition from 160cc streetfighters, tvs needed a modern performance commuter that can hold its own. For this, the hosur-based bikemaker introduced a smaller version of the rtr, called the apache rtr 160 . It has a similar design language as its elder brother and comes with a slightly more comfortable single-piece handlebar. Thanks to the refined engine, slick gearbox and potent underpinnings, the rtr 160 is one of the most versatile 160cc nakeds one can buy.
