Benelli Imperiale 400 Summary

Price: Benelli Imperiale 400 price for its variant - Imperiale 400 Standard starts at Rs. 2,83,434. The mentioned Imperiale 400 price is the on-road price of Hyderabad.

Benelli Imperiale 400 is a cruiser bike available in only 1 variant and 3 colours. The Benelli Imperiale 400 is powered by 374cc BS6 engine which develops a power of 20.7 bhp and a torque of 29 Nm. With both front and rear disc brakes, Benelli Imperiale 400 comes up with anti-locking braking system. This Imperiale 400 bike weighs 205 kg and has a fuel tank capacity of 12 liters.

The Imperiale 400 is Benelli’s modern-retro motorcycle that goes against the likes of the Royal Enfield Classic 350 and Jawa Standard. The Imperiale 400’s price is higher than its rivals, which went further high during the BS6 transition. However, Benelli recently reduced its price by Rs 10,000 by increasing the degree of localisation in its production.

In terms of design, the Imperiale is a quintessential vintage bike with a round headlamp with a chrome casing flanked by round, chrome finished turn indicators. It also gets more chrome on the tail lamp, mirrors, levers and spoke wheels. It is built around a steel-double cradle frame that holds a peanut-shaped fuel tank and a split-seat setup. Benelli has equipped the bike with a twin-pod instrument cluster with chrome bezels that give it a retro look.

The Imperiale 400 comes powered by a 374cc, single-cylinder motor that produces 20.7bhp of power and 29Nm of torque. Interestingly, these performance numbers are higher as compared to its BS4 counterpart. The engine comes mated to a five-speed gearbox. Suspension duties are handled by 41mm telescopic forks up front and pre-load adjustable twin shock absorbers at the rear. Meanwhile, braking hardware comprises of 300mm disc brake upfront and a 240mm brake at the rear assisted by dual-channel ABS.

The Benelli Imperiale 400 is offered in three colour options- black, red and silver.

BikeWale's Take

The Imperiale 400 is an entry-level cruiser motorcycle from Benelli. It was launched to take on the high-selling Royal Enfield Classic 350, but haven’t been able to accomplish that. Blame the lack of brand appeal. While the Imperiale 400 does manage to showcase its modern-classic styling, it fails to entice the customers due to lack of modern elements like digital instrument cluster, tubeless tyres and LED lights.

Benelli Imperiale 400 Expert Opinion

We recently spent a decent amount of time on the BS6-compliant Imperiale 400’s saddle, to tell you what the modern-classic motorcycle is all about.

Introduction

Benelli Imperiale 400 Left Side View

We Indians have always loved the idea of modern-classic motorcycles. It is evident from the success of the Royal Enfield Classic 350 over the years and the resurrection of Jawa Motorcycles. So, drawn in by the alluring prospect of the segment, Benelli launched the Imperiale 400 in India last year. In its BS4 form, the motorcycle went on to be one of the highest-selling Benelli in India.

And unquestionably, it was then launched as Benelli’s first BS6 offering in the country earlier this year. We recently spent a decent amount of time on the BS6-compliant Imperiale 400’s saddle, to tell you what the modern-classic motorcycle is all about.

The Visuals

Benelli Imperiale 400 Right Front Three Quarter

Now, there isn’t any change to the design or styling of the Imperiale 400. It gets a round headlamp and turn indicators, a sufficient amount of chrome, wire-spoke wheels, and a long, peashooter exhaust- all signs of a perfectly styled modern-classic. The Imperiale also looks brawny. In fact, it is longer and wider than both the Classic 350 and the Jawa.

However, it is the Benelli Imperiale 400’s build quality that makes it special. The paint gets a top-notch metallic flake finish, and this red colour option also offers red stitching on the seats. Even the plastic around the switchgear is built to last and the switchgear itself feels nice and tactile to use. Overall, the Benelli’s fit and finish is impeccable throughout and we found nothing to point a finger at.

The Package

Benelli Imperiale 400 Head Light

Staying true to its retro character, the BS6-compliant Imperiale 400 isn’t high on features, just like the BS4 version. So, you are offered with conventional lighting for the headlamp, tail lamp and turn signals, dual-channel ABS, a hazard lamp, and a twin-pod instrument cluster.

Benelli Imperiale 400 Instrument Cluster

Now, these white back-lit units are essentially analogue; one displaying the speed and the other a tachometer along with tell-tale lights. But the unit also features two LCDs that show time, odometer, fuel gauge, gear position, and two trip meters.

The Ride

Benelli Imperiale 400 Right Side View

Most motorcycles from the ‘70s and ‘80s offered an upright and broad-chested riding posture and the Benelli Imperiale 400 evokes the same feeling as a result of its wide, slightly-pulled back handlebars and neutrally-set foot pegs. To perfect the riding ergonomics, Benelli has fitted the Imperiale’s peanut-shaped tank with a tank grip that feels natural to dig your knees into.

Benelli Imperiale 400 Bike Seat

The Imperiale’s seat has a firm, but comfortable cushioning at both ends with the rider seat sprung underneath for additional support. And with a low seat height of 780mm, the Imperiale will be a good fit even for short riders. While it is fairly easy to flat-foot, the motorcycle’s kerb weight of 205kg can make it daunting to move around. However, the weight starts to feel manageable once in motion and the Imperiale becomes surprisingly nimble, even in traffic.

Benelli Imperiale 400 Left Side View

Complementing the handling is the sprightly 374cc, single-cylinder air-cooled engine with a bassy thump that is sure to put the BS6 Classic 350 to shame. While the output has differed minutely from the BS4 model, the motor still offers an enthusiastic grunt all through the rev range. However, the engine is at its best in the mid-range from 3500rpm to 5500rpm and can cruise at 110kmph all day. All this while, the engine feels supremely refined and has absolutely no vibrations at any point, although it tends to heat up in heavy traffic. But it is only when the needle hits 120kmph that the Imperiale starts to feel unsettled. There is a slight buzz on the handlebar and the front end starts to wobble in complaint.

Benelli Imperiale 400 Right Rear Three Quarter

Now, Benelli hasn’t tweaked or changed the suspension hardware on the BS6 Imperiale, so it continues to have a stiff setup which is unforgiving even over small bumps and potholes, especially when riding solo. Nevertheless, with a pillion on board the ride improves drastically as the suspension manages to cushion out larger undulations with ease.

Our Take

Benelli Imperiale 400 Fuel Tank

Getting straight to the point, the BS6 update for the Benelli Imperiale 400 hasn’t changed anything apart from making it slightly more refined. And at Rs 1.99 lakh, the Imperiale 400 continues to be priced higher than the dual-channel ABS variants of the Royal Enfield Classic 350 and the Jawa that cost Rs 1.69 lakh and Rs 1.82 lakh, respectively.

Setting aside flaws like the stiff suspension and lacklustre braking feel, the extra money for the Imperiale 400 gets you a well-built motorcycle that offers an engaging ride experience and a beautiful sounding exhaust note that fully justifies its modern-classic charm.

As i had ride this bike 3k kms i feel very good and comfort the main thing in this bike is braking is amazing as i seen many review in you tube about breaking is really true and one more wonder thing in this is vibration there is no vibrations this bike i had a to seep of 130 km/h even the is no vibration it does no feel that that your going in 100 kmph its just passes to 100 easily coming to engine as it is a 400 cc there is heating problem i gets too hot but the heat you can observe only when you stop the bike coming to millage i can assure your that the mileage will 30 km/l if you go for a long ride with the accurate speed that is 80 km/h it can easily give you 33-35 km/l
As local rides in traffic it will be around 27-30 km/l that too it depends on your ride overall the bike was good one lagging point is the pillion seat there is some wt un comfort foot rest position could be un comfort if we go for long the shape could be in "z".

      Think twice

      Saradhi Naidu

I am riding this bike since last November 2020. It’s near by 26k kms. I changed the clutch plates twice. First time 6k and 2nd time 25k. It’s heavy on maintenance and 2 times I changed disc pads, chain kit, back tyre, bearings, clutch wire etc and it’s nearly 50k so my suggestion is better think twice before buying and you will need patience to wait for spare parts. I am getting nearly 23 kms mileage per liter.

      Vijay Aradhya

The showroom salesmen know all the complainants and still, they lie bout the bike.
Good ergonomics for long highway rides, but not at all made city and off roads, even though claimed ground clearance is better than royal enfield, the double stand is at a height of just 50-60mm from the ground and hits even fr a minor bump in the city.
Service cost is too high, and have to wait a lot for spares,
I changed my brake pads twice, first at 6k kms and next at 14k.
Due to the delay, the motor problem bike had to be towed to the showroom as there is no kick start at 13k kms.
Now there is a front abs problem.
And the major and dangerous issue is frequent alignment problems, cuz of rusting of spokes. I had to get the wheel aligned twice just within 15k kms.
(summarising - brakes, spoke wheels, service cost, time-consuming services, no after-market spare parts, high rpm issue, and poor electrical wiring are the major issues).
