KTM 390 Adventure [2021] Summary

The 390 Adventure has probably been the most awaited bike of 2020. This adventure motorcycle is being built in India, for India and for the rest of the world.

The KTM 390 Adventure will be based on the naked sibling- the Duke 390. Though based on the street-fighter version, it will borrow traits from the 790 Adventure model in terms of design. This new motorcycle sports a stronger and longer suspension, dual-purpose tyres and a larger fuel tank. The motorcycle gets upright seating position making it more comfortable for longer distances.

The 390 Adventure is powered by the same 373.2cc single-cylinder motor, the Duke 390 is powered with. It comes mated to a six-speed gearbox. ABS will be offered as standard. It also gets switchable traction control system which is first in the segment.

With an aggressive price tag, the KTM 390 Adventure has managed to undercut the BMW G310GS by a large margin. Plus, the KTM out equips the BMW too. The bike is currently offered in two paint schemes –white and orange.

KTM 390 Adventure [2021] Review

  • Good Things

    • Loaded with safety electronics like TCS, ABS
    • Priced quite well
    • Excellent touring motorcycle
  • Could be Better

    • Misses out on spoke wheels
    • Engine misses out on low-end torque
    • Not a full blown adventure bike

BikeWale's Take

The 390 Adventure is the most affordable adventure bike in KTM’s line-up. This motorcycle gets its engine from the 390 Duke in the same tuning. The six-speed gearbox is the same as well, but is integrated with quickshifter. The traction control system and ABS can be switched off making it give more control to the rider. But this ADV misses out on spoke wheels making it more of a touring machine rather than a proper adventure motorcycle.

KTM 390 Adventure [2021] Expert Opinion

we rode the KTM 390 Adventure to find out how it would fair in the likeliest of conditions it will find itself in. And here is what we came back with.

Introduction

KTM 390 Adventure Action

Pros: Comfortable ergonomics, loaded with electronic aids, good value for money

Cons: Vibe-y engine, clunky gearbox

An educated guess would suggest that you must have read our KTM 390 Adventure First Ride Review wherein we explored the motorcycle’s abilities to take the roads less travelled. Well, from there we compiled that the 390 Adventure isn’t of the hardcore off-road variety and would rather prefer its roads well-paved.

So, we rode the motorcycle for a good number of days, to find out how the KTM 390 Adventure would fair in the likeliest of conditions it will find itself in - the chaos of city traffic and long, open and possibly decent patches of tarmac which we dare to call highways. And here is what we came back with.

Quality

KTM 390 Adventure Left Front Three Quarter

However, before we get to the crux of the matter, let’s look into the build quality of the KTM 390 Adventure. For starters, majority of the bodywork is fibre and in this matte shade of orange, might look plastic-y from afar. But mind you, it is anything but flimsy. The quality of components on the 390 Adventure has a sturdy feel and look like they would survive a decent amount of thrashing. Overall, the 390 Adventure is put together quite well with hardly any gaping panel gaps or eyesores in its 790 Adventure-inspired design.

Comfort

KTM 390 Adventure Fuel Tank

The 390 Adventure is a tall motorcycle. An average-height Indian perched up on its seat height of 855mm would surely be tip-toeing with both feet on the ground. Nevertheless, the slim design of the fuel tank makes it less intimidating when required to keep a foot down. In terms of comfort, KTM has hit all the right notes with the 390 Adventure. The motorcycle offers a large and accommodating seat for both the rider and the pillion. This seat stretches just the right amount into the tank to support the thighs. Moreover, the combination of its wide handlebar and neutral set footpegs offers a comfortably upright riding posture.

KTM 390 Adventure Action

It also gets a visor that buffets winds quite well making long highway hauls less fatiguing. When it comes to ride quality, KTM has focused the suspension setup for road use. It feels firmer on smaller bumps and undulations as well as on the larger potholes at low speeds. Upwards of 60kmph, the suspension flattens out the small bumps but the larger potholes are still felt as prominently.

Things are mostly sunny on the ergonomics part of the 390 Adventure although, the downside comes in the form of engine vibrations. These tingling vibrations creep in on the handlebar, seat and footpegs from the start and are there to stay all through the mid-range. While it lessens on the handlebar as speeds increase, the footpegs continue to be victims to the vibes.

Performance

KTM 390 Adventure Engine

Let’s get numbers out of the way first. The 390 Adventure is powered by the same 373cc, single-cylinder engine as the 390 Duke with the same power output - 43bhp and 37Nm. It also has the same gearing ratios although the Austrians have tweaked the motor to suit the Adventure’s character. Now, all of its torque lurks in the mid-range and starts to show up around 4000rpm. Above this mark, the motor feels peppy and revs enthusiastically to 9500rpm. On the highways, the motorcycle feels completely unfazed while cruising at 130kmph. Give it some more gas and it rushes to hit a top speed of 165kmph effortlessly.

KTM 390 Adventure Action

Nevertheless, the fast-revving engine lacks torque in the lower end and the short gearing ratios mean it requires constant shifting between first and second gear in city traffic. Speaking of which, the transmission on the 390 Adventure feels clunkier than the one on the new 390 Duke; and this is even after the quick-shifter is turned on. On the contrast, the clutch pull is light and the downshifts are extremely smooth and precise.

Tipping the scale at 158kg (dry), the 390 Adventure is 9kg heavier than its streetfighter counterpart. However, being a well-balanced motorcycle, none of the extra weight can be felt; be it at standstill or on the move. The 390 Adventure feels just as nimble and agile as the Duke while filtering through traffic.

KTM 390 Adventure Action

And given its short turning radius, the Adventure is easy to ride around tight sports as well. To put a leash on the 43 ponies, the 390 Adventure employs disc brakes at both ends. While the front offers sharp bite and good feedback, the rear brake could do with more feel. We never had the chance to specifically test the cornering ABS, but the system works discreetly well on a straight line.

Technology

KTM 390 Adventure Instrument cluster

On the electronic front, it packs in more than any other motorcycle in its price range. There is a bi-directional quick shifter that can be turned off, switchable ABS, cornering ABS, traction control and ride-by-wire throttle. It also gets the same full-colour, Bluetooth enabled TFT display that can be operated via the switchgear as well as a USB charging socket above the instrument cluster. The 390 Adventure also sports a full-LED headlight which provides substantial illumination at night.

KTM 390 Adventure Headlamp

Fuel Efficiency

KTM 390 Adventure Right Side

On our city test route which involves heavy traffic and a dozen traffic lights, the 390 Adventure returned an average of 25.7kmpl. On the highway, it managed an average of 28-29kmpl. Combine these figures with a fuel tank capacity of 14.5-litres, and the 390 Adventure should have an impressive range of 370-400kms on a single full tank.

Fitness of Purpose

KTM 390 Adventure left rear three quarter

The KTM 390 Adventure fits the bill perfectly for a buyer who wants a comfortably fast and electronically loaded motorcycle in a budget of around Rs 3.5 lakhs. It competes directly against the BMW G310 GS which is Rs 50,000 more expensive and the Royal Enfield Himalayan that is more affordable but lacks the electronic aids of the KTM.

Our Take

KTM 390 Adventure Action

The KTM 390 Adventure, apart from the engine vibes and the clunky gearbox, is a great package overall. It is fast, comfortable, decently fuel-efficient and can go through most potholes and bad terrain without breaking your back. Essentially, it replicates the 390 Duke but also has the ability to go places that the streetfighter would struggle in. And with a sticker price of Rs 2.99 lakhs (ex-showroom), KTM has managed to introduce a value-for-money product yet again!

First time in the world ktm 390 adventure completed iron butt challenge with out breaking indian speed limits

      Phani Raja Gopal Naidu

Hello adventure riders, I bought this bike as it's a saviour of pride on riding, on march 2021, buying experience went smoothly at ktm begumpet, hyderabad, first time with one ring they answered the call, first question when do I will get this vehicle and the immediate answer was we have white in stock, which exactly i was looking for, went through their checklist before buying it under finance, Bajaj finance again did good job for me, never had a bad experience with them, paid 1.75 lakh upfront and rest 2 lakhs which includes road tax, (14%) as it's 3rd vehicle, can't do it on wife's name as well as she already has 2 more on her name, overall I paid an etc 3000 for number plate, registration, Bajaj finance charges etc.
All work done in a span of 3 hoursrs, and meanwhile my bike got ready and came out with a shy face as white one looks more shy in comparison to the orange ones which are very aggressive. Took some selfies along with it and some more with ktm key, these made my wife jealous lol, anyhow she is always my back supporter in my life. Actual fun thing is she gifted this to me, not realizing the rear seat height she can't do, lol she came to know it after she tried to hop onto the bike after PD checklist is done. Never said at that moment, once we reached home she said I only ride with you on RE 350, i said wonderful, as my wife don't join for rides except shopping some stupid things at begum bazar, that moment I was like best eg for memes on biker who's carrying household items packed up around the bike with bags, funny thing is she only hold to her purse rest all falls on handle bars, grab rods, rear bag, etc etc. It's better to have a picture to see that, hope many have it but not me. Lets go back to ktm 390 adventure, as usual after small pooja at home and temple, palms started itching, i want to complete the 1000kms in next day for to lift up the speed restrictions at 6000rpm, but couldn't committed for regular works, it got postponed and suddenly i got a call adventure day is happening bronze level. Are you interested to join as it's first time in Hyderabad, i was so much happy, didn't even bothered my wife calls for 1 hr. Hope married people know what happens when you won't pick your wife's phone for 1 hr. Luckily my kids were with me, all set to understand more about my bike. I learnt how to saddle, fig8, crossing obstacles, trail riding, etc. Overall this adventure day made my confidence up for off roading. This bike really makes different just imagining how many falls i could have avoided if i had this one before.
My first service barely costed me rs1543/- @1000kms, and 2 nd service @1856/- with few parts added to the list, between 1st service to the 2nd service, ktm 390 adventure group has gone from 30 to 230 bikesin a span of 10 months great progressing, luckily i got an opportunity to lead the ktm hyderabad adventure eacapes and any local coffee meets organized by ktm hyderabad, apart from that we explored most of th unexplored places in hyderabad and surroundings, pangong lake of hyderabad, kadthal, narsapur, utm, rachakonda, bodakonda and kcr eco urban park trails, most of them are unknown to hyderabadis.
I have only ridden bike on long tour only ince from hyderabad to chikmangalur, as rest of the time all rides got cancelled due to covid situations.
Finally the day come when u fed up with all going in life and want to do something big here comes the iron butt challenge, saddle sore 1000miles or 1610 kms in 24 hrs and bun burner 1500 miles or 2500kms in 36 hrs. As in India its illegal as our roads and its speed limits r not allow to do it, but national highway is one possibility to complete it without breaking any rules, but you need lot of endurance and technique to complete it successfully, me and my fellow rider successfully completed it without any glitch and its first time in the world somebody completed the iron butt challenge on ktm 390 adventure. The bike stood up to its name dual purpose bike, never had any issue on trails as you people can see videos on my youtube channel @roadsidetravel, coming to touring it works awesome, iron butt challenge successfully completed bcoz of the reason bike can easily do its job on continue riding at speeds on triple digits. Bike can give mileage according to the speeds 70-90 u will get 42kmpl most of the people wonders @ this and no one rides at this speed on the bike , 90-110 u will get 35kmpl, 110-130 u will get 29kmpl and anything more than 130+ u will get 23-29 between depends on how the road either highway or terrain conditions. City it will give you 32-35kmpl and highways as mentioned above. Most of the people comment negative on seat height 553mm but its good for me @5'10" height. Addition to that i use 1.7" risers for saddling comfortability, riding techniques has to improve as my master trainers r at height of 5'4" most of them. This shows height of seat isn't matter only riding technique. Second negative comment on low end torque, i havent faced much on this again technique plays a lot here, only issue faced is after 5503 ecu update vehicle started stalling between 4-3 gear shift only at wrong rpms but who will monitor on screen for rpms so this pblm persists international not only in india. Apart from this one issue rest is all bliss, addition to the bikes power we have slipper clutch, quick shifter, cornering abs, mtc, ride by wire throttle and latest ktm come up with different ride modes, offroad and onroad in 2022 model. Final words, incase if u r looking for all terrain vehicle in budget with all latest technologies go for ktm 390 adventure, no other bike in this segment provides all the above options with better mileage and less maintenance costs.

      Tips for other riders

1st service @1000kms and 2nd service onwards at 7500kms interval , it comes with metzlers so tyre life will be an average of 20000 kms, lube your chain after every 500 kms and clean your chain after every off roading trails, it will increase life of chain, incase If you are more on touring go for additional aux lights cheaper are soln SJG else Madding. Don't go for after market crash Guards as stock are better than after market as per experience and also based on accident figures, upto 110 kmph you don't need additional windshield, depends again on person to person and type of helmet usage. Use KTM Pro XP app always to see about what's happening new in India

The bike (ktm 390adventure) gives you a thrill of a sports bike and at the same time it makes you feel adventurous, it's an amazing bike with good ground clearance and an awesome top speed in this category.
It's a high-raving machine and with slippers clutch and auto flipper the bike has an outstanding performance overall.

It is really a great bike to begin your adventures with. The riding posture is absolutely commanding in position. The performance is as equally good as the looks. Servicing cost is much less compared to other adventure bikes or superbikes and maintenance are also easy. Pros super fast bike con low-end gear problem.

      Almost a perfect adventure bike

      Jatin

Almost a perfect bike with minor flaws if you're willing to make adjustments.
      - vibrations at low rpm around 3000-4000 rpm. This is bound to happen in single cylinder engines and there is no way around it. Vibes get lowered after 1st service.
      - it is a demanding bike and will urge you to keep it in right gear at all times. No way around this.
      - seat height is high for short riders. But if you want, you can manage with flat foot on 1 side.
      Now the good part:
      - extremely planted bike. Be it straight road or curves. It feels really stable.
      - best brakes in the segment. Abs is superbly calibrated.
      - bulletproof tested 390 engine. It reaches 110-120 kmph very very easily and just glides.
      - plenty of aftermarket parts & mods available. You can modify as per your taste.
      - commanding seating position which gives really good view of what's in front.
      - nice tft screen. Love it.
Overall it is a good touring bike. 100% recommended. Do not fall for reviewers who have not owned this bike.
