Sena 20S Dual Bluetooth Headset

Cellphone slaves, that’s what most of us have become. And we seem to be suffering from the exact opposite of what is known as phone phobia. The latter is the reluctance of taking or making calls. However, for us, the anxiety related to calls is more about missing one than making one. And on motorcycles, the irrepressible urge of taking a call isn’t just inconvenient (given one must stop, remove the helmet, take off the gloves and then reach for the ringing phone only to realise, it has stopped ringing), it can be dangerous as well. Imagine not stopping on the shoulder by just by the side of the road only to be taken out by a vehicle making a wrong overtaking move.

The saviours

This is where helmet Bluetooth systems surface as saviours. And with more and more people getting on big bikes and touring together, not to mention riding them to work everyday, what one needs is a system that allows you to take calls with the helmet on and on the move, speak to fellow riders on intercom, and on those long boring commutes, listen to some radio as well. The Sena 20S Motorcycle Bluetooth Communication System is one such product offered by Sena Technologies. But, the 20S isn’t just another helmet Bluetooth system, it is a top-spec, feature loaded unit. But before we get into that, here’s a little introduction of the company that makes it.

The company

Sena Technologies started in 1998. But, it’s only in 2010 that it forayed into motorcycle Bluetooth communication systems. But, since then, not only has it forayed into over 150 countries including India, but it has also managed to become number one in nearly all the markets it is present in. And globally, it is comfortably number one.

In India, Sena markets its Bluetooth communication systems via Moto Sports Accessories India based in Hyderabad. But, it has 14 dealers in all major motorcycle markets in India like Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai and Bengaluru among others. One can also buy its Bluetooth range – which range from the affordable 3S (for both open and full face helmets) to this high-end 20S we have here for a review – online. Visit www.motosportsindia.com for details.

In the box

Now back to product at hand and here’s what one gets inside the box…

That box might not seem too big but inside you get two of everything from the 20S headset main units to universal helmet clamps, boom mics and wired microphones as well. Plus, there’s a whole assortment of accessories from microphone sponges to charging cables to speaker pads and foam covers to an Allen wrench.

The main headset operates everything from choosing FM or Bluetooth playback or intercom modes via the joggle dial and two other buttons, while the clamp unit comfortably goes into the space between the helmet shell and padding. The speakers meanwhile come with 3M stick pads and Velcro linings to fit inside the helmet padding for a secure fit. The same is true for the wired microphone.

We will get into details of functioning of each of these components and how to best install them in your helmet in the next report. So stay tuned.
