Yamaha has unveiled a new scooter based on the Cygnus Ray, called the Cygnus Ray ZR at the Auto Expo.
What’s new?
The Ray ZR is based on the Ray Z but that is more or less all about it. The body panels are new with integrated indicators on the front fender of the scooter. Even the side panels and the grab handle for the pillion are new. The ZR also gets a new instrument cluster. What’s not new is the reliable 113cc single cylinder petrol engine from the Ray Z that develops 7bhp of power and is mated to a CVT gearbox.
India relevance?
This is a scooter built for the young boys who would want to buy their own scooters after school. It is flashy and loud and comes with two paint schemes each for the drum brake and the disc brake versions. Ray ZR with hydraulic disc brakes gets louder decals and alloy wheels unlike the pressed disc wheels of the drum brake variant. It gets a 21-litre under-seat storage space, enough for a full-size helmet.
Launch plans?
The Ray ZR will hit the markets by May and is expected to be priced at a premium over the Cygnus Ray Z, a tad above Rs 50,000 ex-showroom, Delhi for the drum brake version while the disc brake version with the alloys may be Rs 5,000 more at the least. The Ray ZR will face stiff competition from the Honda Activa and the Hero Duet scooters.
