Indian Motorcycle is an American manufacturer of premium cruiser motorcycles. In 2011, Polaris Industries, popularly known for its snowmobiles and ATVs, purchased the Indian brand and started production of new-gen Indian motorcycles. Indian has earned the distinction of being one of America’s most legendary and iconic brands owing to its racing heritage, engineering innovations and industry firsts.
The Indian Motocycle Company was originally founded by George M. Hendee in 1897 to manufacture bicycles. Oscar Hedstrom joined in 1900 and became a partner and chief engineer. Both Hendee and Hedstrom were former bicycle racers and manufacturers, and they teamed up to produce a motorcycle with a 1.75bhp, single-cylinder engine. The American manufacturer originally produced motorcycles from 1901 to 1953 in Springfield, Massachusetts.
In 2014, Polaris India launched the Indian Motorcycle brand here in India. As of now, Polaris offers the entire range of Indian motorcycles over here, all of which are imported to the country as completely built units (CBUs). Their portfolio includes the Chief range, Springfield, Roadmaster and the Scout.
The Chief line-up consists of a range of models including the old-school Chief Classic to the heavyweight luxury cruiser – the Chieftain. The Dark Horse is a blacked-out version of the Chief Classic while the Roadmaster and Springfield are luxury baggers. The Scout on the other hand is a complete departure from the rest of the range and is more of a lightweight and ‘fun’ motorcycle. While the Scout is based on a recently developed platform with a liquid-cooled engine, the rest of the line-up continues with Indian’s traditional air-cooled powertrains.
