Yamaha SS 125 Summary

Yamaha in India is mostly known for its R15, FZ-16, Ray scooter and high performance R1 but the company also sells motorcycles that necessarily need to go very fast. The Yamaha SS125 is one of them. This 125cc sporty look bike has been inspired from the Gladiator that has been discontinued.

The SS125 overall design language clearly shows it has been designed for consumers who are conscious about the way their bike looks. It has sleek body and has many curves across the bike with bright decals doing a good job.

The SS125 is powered by a 125cc single-cylinder air-cooled engine that produces 10.8bhp at 7500rpm and 10.4Nm at 6500 rpm. This engine is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox and the power is transmitted to its rear wheel via chain drive. For stopping power, the company has fitted the SS125 with disc brake at the front and drum at the rear. It can carry 13.6 litres of fuel in one go and weighs 125 kg. The Yamaha SS125 is available in two colour options – Blue and Black, Black and Red.

      Mighty gladiator SS125- forgotten legend

      Abhinandan Ghosh

      1. I had booked the fz-16 back in 2014, but changed my mind & decided on the SS125 as I needed something lighter that my father could ride as well, the showroom re-arranged the paperwork without any issues.
      2. It has been a blissful experience riding this motorcycle. I practically learned riding on this bike. I have thrashed it as hard as possible for 7 years & 120000 kms; & it still revs buttery smoothly & there is never any vibration even at 100+ kmph
      3. Looks aren't as edgy as today's 125ccs but it's quite decent & it was ahead of its time & still is.
      4. Maintaining a yamaha has always been a bit on the expensive side, especially now that it is discontinued. But it doesn't require much maintenance unless you crash & break something. Just change the engine oil & tire etc at regular interval & the gladiator will last a lifetime
      5. Pros- crazy fast for 125cc, oodles of torque, very nimble, large fuel tank, engine kill switch(not even the tvs raider has one)
Cons- poor fuel economy, weak headlamps, no trip meters
"the SS125 is a tremendously sporty motorcycle when you are in the mood but otherwise is a gentle creature. The engine is ultra-refined, ride quality is great and in pure no-performance-only-commuting mode, a more peaceful motorcycle will be hard to find."-overdrive

It is a good bike, i owned this bike for 10 year and about 50000 km, always done service at regular intervals, this bikes never bothered me, only its rear braking and tyre was not good, i change the tyre as off roading tyre and then it never get punctured in 10 years... I love this bike and feel proud to have it.. Yamaha always gives rugged engine which are tough and need no maintenance in this 125 cc group.. My bikes engine never got opened..

The bike is a worst experience, the gear box broke within 10000 km, servicing is also very bad, bike vibrates at low speed & mileage is not satisfactory. spares are costly and not rudely available. engine power is less , seat is hard wastage of money as it requires frequent maintenance for the bike. engine sound pitch is high.

I have blue black coloured of 2013 model. Pros: excellent look. Extremely good suspension. Mileage 52 to 62 kmpl. Good n uniform pick up with 11bhp engine for safety. Just ride n experience. Good for long journey. Cons: colour should be more durable. Difficult to start in early morning during winter. Blue or blue black are best colour. Cost of parts is high n not available always.

Such a wonderful 125cc sporty, stylish and performance bike. I took it for long ride around 1200kms (up & down) it feels fantastic. If you ride this bike around 60 - 70kms on daily commute you will get more than 55kms mileage. In long straight it will surely beats its rivals shine & glamour without doubt. I reached 110kmph as max speed in my bike. Still owns it.

      Rahul Kumar Pal

All things of this bike is good looks, power, suspension, ride quality, mileage is (55km/lit), still i have this bike with me and i have ride it to 75000 km till now i don't feel any problem in morning start , my major concern was the spare part are costly and not available in market as compare to other bike. I do my bike servicing at 4000 to 5000 km with liquidity 5w40 molygen imported oil from germany and i have done it 7 times engine is still smooth with less noise.I do my bike service at local garages.

The most worst bike i have ever seen. First thing is the seat is not good enough & get pain after driving for a short period. Then the engine is not good & fuel economy is the worst. I have ran for 32300 kms i have done major overhauling of the engine & gearbox twice & the cost of maintenance is very high.

Yes yamaha ss-125. Economically stylish but.....

      Sivaprasad

Well, i bought my first bike, yamaha ss125 in 2011. Cause i kinda restricted on budget hence i was seeing around 55-65k range bikes. As a personal fan of yamaha, i didn't consider other brand's models. In yamaha, i narrowed down to sx-r, ss125. This ss125 is almost same like old gladiator model but with slight changes. Especially eye-catching sporty engine cover it attracts. After using a while (>6 yrs) i am happy with the decision. I lost the free servicing book given at the time of purchase and dealer is not ready to do free service without the book. I managed with my own money and i felt they could've done something for it. The place i am living had the average service capability, surely not the best or better. After servicing your bike you still feel that, something more can be done. 6 months back bike had a breakdown and had to call the mechanic to the house to take it, a major engine problem led to a charge of inr 5k and later servicing also paid inr 4k. The reviews on yamaha service centers in hyderabad are pathetic. I am afraid to go there and i feel better to take it to the hometown. When it comes to the bike performance, it gave around 50kmpl mileage on average and i use it regular day to day to purpose. A couple of times i rode >100 km at a stretch and it is never a problem. Max speed can touch near 90-95km and sometimes 100km when wind and road co-operate but you don't feel safe when you drive on high speed probably due to the rear tire size. I love the placement of handlebar, unlike other splendor/passion where it is high placed. It is more comfortable for short and long drives.
