BMW S 1000 XR likely to get major update for 2020

- 2020 S 1000 XR is expected to get 9Cento concept-inspired styling

- Likely to feature BMW’s new ShiftCam technology for its engine

- Could also boast of radar-assisted adaptive cruise control tech

BMW Motorrad had revealed its 2020 model range in the first week of July. The absence of the S 1000 XR touring model in this list made us believe that the bike is undergoing a major overhaul. To back up our speculations, a new report now suggests that a comprehensively-updated S 1000 XR for 2020 is in the making. 

One of the major changes could be on the engine of the tourer. While the current displacement of 999cc, four-cylinder might be retained as it is, it is likely to get BMW’s newly-developed ShiftCam variable valve timing technology. Besides improving the performance, this tech will also help the motor comply with upcoming Euro 5 emission norms. To cradle this tweaked powerplant, BMW will also need a reworked chassis, similar to the 2020 S 1000 RR which gets a new twin-spar frame. 

As for the styling bit, the next-gen S 1000 XR might be a major departure from its current design, similar to its sportsbike sibling. In case you remember BMW’s 9Cento concept design, a similar sharp and angular styling is likely to be adapted for the upcoming S 1000 XR. Notably, reports suggest that the German bikemaker is also readying an 850cc touring model based on the 9Cento concept, likely to go by the name F850 RS. 

In term of electronic aids, BMW motorcycles have always been loaded with tech to the brim. With the 2020 S 1000 XR though, the bikemaker might up the ante by introducing a radar-assisted cruise control and rider safety feature, which KTM was recently spotted testing. 

As for the competition of the 2020 S 1000 XR, Ducati and KTM are working on their upcoming touring models, V4-powered Multistrada and the 1290 Super Adventure.
