EICMA 2018: New BMW S1000RR revealed

- Gets new design, engine, electronics

- Dynamic damping is now standard

- India launch next year

One of the most awaited motorcycles at 2018 EICMA has been finally unveiled. BMW has taken the wraps off its new supersport machine, the S1000RR. While the leaks did reveal quite a few things about the bike, the official unveil finally tells us what this bike is all about. 

The most obvious change to the S1000RR is the design. The German bike maker ditched the asymmetrical front for the bike and has now given it a sharp and aggressive fascia. 

The new S1000RR is powered by a new 1000cc in-line four cylinder which is now 4kgs lighter. This motor now produces 207bhp at 13,500rpm and peak torque of 113Nm at 11,000rpm. This engine uses BMW’s shiftcam technology for variation of valve timings and valve strokes on the intake side. The company claims that atleast 100Nm of torque is generated from 5500rpm to 14,500rpm. 

The company has developed a new suspension system that features something called Flex Frame, with engine taking on more of a load-bearing function. The suspension has been refined to improve the handling, increased traction and superior feedback. It also sports electronics damping through Dynamic Damping Control. 

BMW has managed to reduce the weight of the bike to 197kgs, which is 11kgs lighter than the outgoing model. The new exhaust system weighs 1.3kgs less. In terms of electronics, the new S1000RR gets new 6-axis IMU, Dynamic Traction Control and DTC wheeling function as standard.  It also gets an adjustable engine braking system along with ABS Pro for superior braking experience. Shift Assistant Pro for fast up and down shifting without clutch comes as standard, just like the launch control. 

The new S1000RR will go on sale early next year. The India launch is expected to take place in the first quarter of 2019 but expect a drastic increase in the price tag. It will go against the Yamaha YZF-R1, Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R and the Suzuki-GSX-S1000R.
