Introduction
We have spent the last few months using the Alpinestars Supertech R boots extensively. We have used them on commutes, at the racetrack, and even to walk around all day in the office. Now, before we tell you how they fared, here’s a little reminder on why these boots cost as much as they do, and what makes them special.
To quickly run you through – these are the same boots MotoGP heroes Marc Marquez and Jorge Lorenzo race in. These use microfibre construction instead of leather, which makes them light, more durable, and richer looking. The Supertechs come with a separate inner boot, and with the sturdy zippers and ratchets to shut them close.
Now, on to the experience…
Track Outing
On the racetrack, especially when it is almost 44 degrees – ambient, you need your riding gear to be well ventilated. The Alpinestars Supertech R Boots are brilliant in that regard. The inner booty is a complex mesh of, well, mesh with big openings. And so your feet get very well aired while riding. The outer boot is properly vented too. So, at the end of every riding session, I had bone dry feet, which for me is as rare as spotting a Yeti. The abominable snowman, not the car.
These Alpinestars also make it super easy to hook on to the bike. The inner or medial side of the boot has soft, velvet like finish, which helps the boot grip the motorcycle. These also keep the heat away, which I was quite thankful for, when riding the Ducati Panigale.
The heel of the boot is well designed too, and has a flat enough surface to make a larger contact patch with the bike’s heel-plate. There’s enough flexibility in the bridge area to enable quick gearshifts, no matter the angle of the gear shifter. And the feel from the boot’s sole, even with the inner booty, is fantastic.
Street Use
And, this feel from the boots’ sole is something we appreciated on the road, no end. Not only did it give us better footing over uneven and slippery surfaces, it also made it super easy to use the rear brake. The Supertech R boots are one of the better race boots (or boots in general, to be honest) for modulating the rear brake.
Ventilation of the boots, again played a huge role in making our commutes more than bearable. Moreover, the soft silicon material around the boot opening, which is essentially there to help interface with the leather suit, didn’t feel uncomfortable on the skin when we wore them under riding denims.
Then of course, we spent a day in the Supertechs walking, squatting, standing, and running up and down in the office. And I was really surprised at how these never got in the way. These were airy, light, flexible, and eyeball grabbing, but never a bother.
Our take
The Alpinestars Supertech boots are right up there on almost all counts, price included. But, if you can spend that sort of money, these are absolute must-haves! For starters these look good. And these are comfortable. Not to mention, the Supertechs are well ventilated and flexible enough to use daily! And, there’s no compromise when it comes to protection, especially when riding on a racetrack.
Like we said earlier, these definitely go under the ‘buy’ column.
