- KTM spotted testing the 2021 model of 1290 Super Duke GT
- Features an all-new frame and revised sub-frame
- Powered by the tweaked version of the existing 1301cc, V-twin motor
KTM is working on the next-generation model of its full-size sport touring motorcycle, the 1290 Super Duke GT, in Europe. Likely to be the 2021 model year, it was recently spotted undergoing tests with KTM’s official rider Jeremy McWilliams, revealing various details about the bike.
Going by the spy shots, the 2021 KTM 1290 Super Duke GT seems to borrow its reworked engine and certain mechanical components from the 2020 model of its naked sibling, the 1290 Super Duke R. Starting with the engine, it is apparently powered by a revised version of the existing 1301cc, V-twin motor which makes 177.5bhp and 140Nm on the ballistic R model. The exhaust setup also looks tweaked to comply with the upcoming Euro 5 emission norms. Other changes include a slightly larger radiator along with a wider gap between the two LED headlamps for housing the larger central air intake.
Moving on to the mechanicals, the biggest change comes in the form of a new frame and sub-frame. The trellis-type main frame of the existing model have been done away with in favour of a new and compact Super Duke R-like chassis which uses the engine as the stressed member. Moreover, the sub-frame also appears reworked, perhaps to make it more accommodating for delivering enhanced pillion comfort and better luggage-mounting space. Furthermore, the wheels and swingarm are also new, likely to be the same units seen on the 2020 Super Duke R model.
What’s more, KTM has also equipped the upcoming Super Duke GT with its modern five-inch TFT display which comes with Bluetooth connectivity for smartphone pairing. Now, what remains unchanged is its angular styling with the low-slung and pointed headlamp design accompanied by a tall visor. The sculpted fuel tank and sharp extensions have also been retained from the existing model.
KTM is expected to launch the next-generation 1290 Super Duke GT by early-2021 in the international markets. As of now, the Austrian bike maker doesn’t sell its 1290 offerings in India. However, with the growing market for premium motorcycles, we hope KTM brings its high-end offerings to our shores soon.
